Universal Collection | East Africa

In Ethiopia, Cambridge Industries implemented a city-wide waste collection strategy, significantly enhancing waste management by involving small businesses in universal collection efforts. The strategy included integrating waste management tariffs with a progressive water payment system, encouraging efficiency and fairness in utility payments. With over 950 skip bins placed in dedicated hubs across designated zones, this approach drastically improved waste collection rates from 30% to over 85% in under three years. Additionally, the project created over 10,000 local jobs, showcasing a successful model of sustainable urban waste management that boosts both environmental health and economic growth.
